Our Story

On the night of December 2nd, 1984, a Union Carbide plant in Bhopal began leaking 27 tons of deadly methyl isocyanate gas. None of the safety systems were operational, allowing the gas to spread throughout the city.

Half a million people were exposed to the gas and 25,000 have died to date as a result. More than 150,000 people still suffer from ailments caused by the accident and subsequent pollution.

Chingari Trust was established in 2005 by two gas tragedy survivors, Champa Devi Shukla and Rashida Bee, using prize money from the Goldman Environmental Award they received for their activism.
